Description
Abstract Study was carried out in the three communities of the Dangbe West District of Ghana, which was one of the pilot areas of the NPRP. Study ascertained what changes had occurred in the lives of the women in the Dangbe West District over the years of their engagement in the NPRP. Results were a mixed bag in that whilst some women had benefited from the program, the expectations of others had largely been unmet. Those who had benefited were those who engaged in beekeeping at Kodiabe, who had received training, owned their own beehives and had a ready market for their honey. At Sota, the women could benefit from their food processing activity if they had their own milling machine, so they could eliminate long distance travel (which are up most of their profits) for milling. In Agomeda, the major problem faced by the women was the lack of markets for their markets. Micro and macro policy recommendations were made for increasing the productivity of these women. Like Hinson et al (2005) noted about gender studies in Ghana, more 'need to be carried out'. Further studies need to be carried out specifically on Ghanaian women to access the national impacts of poverty reduction programmes on feminine economic empowerment. Ultimately the Ministry for Women's Affairs in Ghana would have to begin to greatly improve its economic empowerment programs aimed at women if the economic lot of women in the various regions of Ghana is to be improved.
