Description

With the second round of funding in the Ontario Library Investment Project now complete, there has been much attention called to the percentage of that money that went towards Canadian material. Based exclusively on sales of titles from members of the Association of Canadian Publishers (ACP), the figure supplied of roughly 20% would seem surprisingly low. If you factor in non-ACP members such as Scholastic Canada, HarperCollins Canada, Penguin Group (Canada) and Random House of Canada, this percentage would certainly increase, but the majority of the provincial funding was spent on material published outside Canada. Canada boasts gifted authors who write for children and teens, many of whom gain wider exposure through provincial reading programs such as those held in Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nova Scotia. So then why doesn't more Canadian material sell? It certainly isn't for lack of talent!
